Welcome
It
is an honor to "host" the second edition of the Create Now! ezine
and I welcome all of our new and returning readers. It has been an exciting
couple of months as Create Now! continues to expand its reach and
recognition. This year Create Now! has already connected over 2,200
troubled youth across Southern California with some of the world's foremost
musicians and artists, exposing them to life-improving experiences and giving
them the motivation and courage to try something new. But as demand for Create Now! increases, so too does the organization's need for support by community
members like yourself. I hope that you enjoy reading about Create Now!'s most recent activities, but I also hope that you take the time
to pass this information along to your friends, visit our website (www.createnow.org)
and support the cause of changing troubled youths' lives through exposure to
the arts.

Create Now!
What's New
Create Now! was contacted by the STAPLES Center Foundation this past July. They're currently constructing L.A. Live - a $1 billion sports and entertainment district across from their arena. It will feature six city blocks of apartments, ballrooms, bars, concert theaters, condominiums, restaurants, movie theaters and a hotel.
STAPLES Center Foundation takes great pride in the nonprofit partners it supports. They're always looking for new ways to work with the charities that reside in the neighborhoods surrounding the arena, and Create Now!'s offices are just two miles away. They offered us (along with other community organizations), a wonderful opportunity to have some of the youth that we serve paint murals on part of the 3,000 feet of fencing that circles the construction site near Olympic Blvd. East and West.

On
May 8th, Create Now! received this email from Maria Vicente: "Hello, I
was recently promoted to director at Camp Karl Holton. As a supervisor years
ago at Camp Fred Miller, I recall many outings and free tickets you provided
to the kids there. I seem to recall a drum session treat for the boys. Any
information you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!"
What Ms. Vicente was referring to was the concert that Create Now! presented at Camp Miller in Malibu several years ago. Our board member Mark Schulman is a world-class drummer and cancer survivor. He works with superstars like Pink, Cher, Sheryl Crow, Billy Idol, Destiny's Child, Al Green and on soundtracks like "School of Rock."
A Mentor's Story
Create Now! Mentor Talyn Khanbabyan is a fashion designer. She has taught several popular Fashion Design Workshops at Aviva Center group homes for abused, neglected and abandoned teenage girls. Here's her story:
I first heard about Create Now! two years ago while searching online for a volunteer program to become a part of. I immediately was attracted to their vision of helping to change lives through creative arts mentoring, and was thrilled at the opportunity to enhance the lives of others through creative expression. I have always believed that creativity is essential in many ways, and was excited to find a place to put my knowledge and passion to use.

When I grow up
By Alexis G.
(Keniston House)
When I grow up I wonder if people will be more afraid to cry
than they are to die.
Will I be able to see a rainbow in a small field sky?
Will there be any trees alive?
If not how will we survive?
Will the internet have a web site at www.lifetime air
supply.
When I grow up, if I get bored and there's nothing to do,
and me and my daughter build a canoe
out of water that used to be blue,
but now is so polluted it would give us the flu.
Will a thousand dollars be enough for a shoe?
Will I have to be like you,
letting money make every decision about everything that I do.
When I grow up, will the existence of dolphins and whales
just be another story I tell?
Starting with "Once upon a time" and ending with "Where
did we fail?"
Will schools be next door to a jail?
Will the truth be illegal to sell?
When I grow up, will anyone be on the news for anything besides killing?
Will those drug dealers still be standing outside of my building?
Will they ever learn love or stay afraid of the feeling?
Will TV and videos still raise America's children?
When I grow up will innocent kids still be wrongfully touched?
Will students ride home in a bullet-proof bus?
What if children had no one to trust?
That would hurt me so much.
And I want to be happy when I grow up.
