(She's about to walk away. James stops her. Takes out a jewelry box from his pocket)

JAMES

What do you think?

(Crystal turns around. SEES the box. James hands it to her)

CRYSTAL

Oh, James -- Crystal opens it.

(SEES a gold chain necklace.)

JAMES

Happy Anniversary, baby. Three months on the dot --

CRYSTAL

It's beautiful. Put it on for me -- She twirls around. He fastens the chain around her neck. She turns back and gives him a kiss.

CRYSTAL

It's the most beautiful thing anyone ever gave me -- Where you get this thing?

JAMES

Baby -- I gotta know somethin' --

CRYSTAL

Anything baby --

JAMES

You know how we was talkin' the other day -- about Milwaukee?

CRYSTAL

You mean about movin' when you get to be 18?

JAMES

I'm goin' next week -- And I -- I was hopin' -- I want you to come with me -- Silence. She plays with the necklace as she thinks.

SFX: POLICE SIREN

JAMES

So, what you think?

CRYSTAL

I think . . . yes!

(Crystal goes to hug James, but before she reaches him-- COP ENTERS and gets in James's face.)

COP

You James Mitchell?

JAMES

Yeah

-- Cop CUFFS him.--

COP

You gotta right to remain silent --

CRYSTAL

James -- what's happenin'? Cop turns to her.

COP

Nice necklace. Where'd you get that?

JAMES

Go home baby -- go on home --

CRYSTAL

But James --

COP

What'd you say your name was?

JAMES

Leave her outta this --

CRYSTAL

Where you takin' him? When I gonna see you, James?

COP

He'll send you a letter --

(COP roughly takes James away. Cop and Crystal exit. James reappears alone.)

JAMES

Crystal writes me a lot. And she comes to visit me. It's not like it was. But she's gonna move to Milwaukee with me -- soon's I get out. I know she is . . .
