Create Now! holds an orientation and training session for all new volunteers four times each year. Training consists of an introduction to Create Now!, how to work with high-risk youth, tips and techniques for dealing with potential obstacles that may arise, discussion of your workshop and curriculum and provides a forum for new mentors to have any questions answered about their classes or experience.
In addition to the training, Create Now!'s Program Director will meet one-on-one with each mentor to review your lesson plans or give you lesson plans if you are in need of them.
In addition to this training, Create Now! provides all mentors a detailed "Mentor Training Manual." It includes sample lesson plans and advice from other mentors who have participated in the program. Periodically, we also invite all mentors to share lunch in an informal gathering as well as hold additional training sessions for those mentors interested in teaching a particular curriculum.
It is required by the State of California that all employees or volunteers who work directly with minors must have a criminal background check done, which includes completion of forms, photo identification and fingerprinting. Some facilities also insist that volunteers have a tuberculosis exam and/or a physical. Create Now! will help facilitiate this process
