Havaianas has been a great partner of Create Now and our “Art from the Sole” program provided through Zoom on December 12 was no exception! Through their support, youth facing challenges from Angel’s Flight Shelter, Penny Lane Centers, Koreatown Youth and Community Center, and Nuevo Amanecer Latino Children’s Services were each given a pair of flip flops in their size, which they were able to decorate any way they liked. Their craft packs included plenty of decorations they could use to make their sandals beautiful, like ribbons, paint and crystals!
Our terrific volunteer, Megers Frierson, instructed the kids on different ways and techniques they could use to decorate their shoes. Megers even showed how he designed his flip flop sandals by using a crystal mesh fabric and paint. He said, “My favorite part is always seeing what the youth come up with! They all have such imaginative minds and to show what they have created really lights them up.”
One young participant, Samantha, said she is going to be “flippy floppy everywhere” as she plans to wear her beautiful sandals to the beach so she can “flip her flops everywhere in the sand.”
We are very grateful to Havaianas for sponsoring this program, which enabled Create Now to provide these children with the chance to express themselves creatively in spite of the COVID pandemic.
